67663-01 - Practical course: The Russian-Ukrainian War: Conflict Analysis, Mediation and Dialogue Interventions 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Tetiana Kyselova (tetiana.kyselova@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course belongs to a highly multidisciplinary area of research and practice – Peace and Conflict Studies/ Conflict Resolution and focuses on the aggression of the Russian Federation in Ukraine that started in 2014 and continues with the large-scale invasion from February 2022 until now. The teaching goal of the course is to introduce students to the basic conflict resolution approaches and tools, and to contextualize this knowledge to the current war in Ukraine thereby offering practical insights into deep societal processes in Ukraine such as identity formation, state-building and civil society mobilization.
The course consists of three modules. The first module – “Approaches to Conflict and Conflict Resolution” will introduce students to the notions of conflict and conflict dynamics as well as the theoretical basics of negotiation and mediation. Students will take part in a negotiation role play (simulation) and do a reflection on the simulation. The second module – “Conflict Analysis Skills” will introduce students to the several conflict-analysis tools. Then, the students will practice conflict-analysis based on the Ukraine case-study. The third module – “Mediation and Dialogue Interventions” will introduce students to the landscape of mediation and dialogue in Ukraine – from track one political negotiations in Minsk in 2014-2021, to track three grass-root dialogue initiatives in local communities. The students will be equipped with the multitrack approach to mediation and will get the wholistic picture of the mediation and dialogue interventions, their design and impact, as well as challenges of connections between initiatives at various tracks.
