67581-01 - Seminar: Shakespeare and Religion 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Was Shakespeare a Catholic? The early 2000s saw a heated debate among critics about Shakespeare's beliefs and his possible crypto-Catholicism. In this seminar, we will trace this debate and discuss the merits and the limitations of biographical criticism. Building on this, we will explore how Shakespeare dramatizes, and interrogates religion and spirituality.
Learning objectives Students will expand their knowledge of Shakespeare’s work and explore how it relates to the religious discourses and sectarian tensions of his time.
