67583-01 - Research seminar: Linguistic and Intercultural Challenges of International Student Mobility (ISM): The Role of English 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Zeynep Köylü (zeynep.koylu@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This research seminar includes a survey of intercultural awareness (ICA) and communicative competence development (ICC) in international student mobility (ISM), paying special attention to the role of English as a lingua franca (ELF). It aims to equip students with the tools to understand the key cross-cultural and linguistics challenges of ISM. Some of the variables/topics to be discussed in this seminar are the role of language competence (e.g., general proficiency and pragmatic competence) in building social networks to become aware of intercultural challenges. We will also discuss some key theories pertained to ICA and ICC and conceptualize empirical studies in ISM. By the end of this seminar, you will develop an understanding of how several different aspects of English as an L2 and as a lingua franca would add to ICA and ICC gains during ISM. Students will also be given a chance to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze textual data in light of the abovementioned variables and concepts.
Learning objectives • You will know and discuss the fundamental concepts as to ELF, ICA and ICC in ISM.
• You will be able to identify the role of English as a lingua franca and a mediator language.
• You will be familiar with the relevant research strand in SLA.
• You will be able to synthesize theory and ISM research in a written assignment.
• You will be able to analyze data and how they relate to L2 development and ICA/ICC gains.
