67586-01 - Research seminar: Nineteenth-Century Women's Writing 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course is devoted to women’s writing from the Romantic and Victorian periods. In particular, we want to explore what lies beyond the canonized novels of Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters or George Eliot in order to get a sense of the richness and variety of literary creations by women. Readings will include a sensation novel, poetry, short stories, essays and drama, and we will take account of the critical state of the art about these works.
Learning objectives Students will expand their knowledge of women's writing in the Romantic and Victorian periods. They will both get an overview and engage in close readings. Readings and seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent further research.
