65304-01 - Lecture: The Law and Economics of Regulating Medical Products 3 CP

Content Regulation of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices - fields of rapid technological growth and innovation - are topics of legal, economic, and policy significance. We will study how technological advances, including artificial intelligence, in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry challenge and demand redefinition of the institutional relationships between the FDA and courts, and of the mechanisms of supervision and control provided by the market, governmental regulation, and products liability litigation.
Learning objectives We will study how technological advances in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry challenge and demand redefinition of the institutional relationships between agencies and courts, and of the mechanisms of supervision and control provided by the market, government, and common law litigation.
Bibliography The reading materials will consist of excerpts from law review articles/ book chapters and also case studies (from court cases engaging the topics).
Comments This course is part of the Summer School in Law, Business and Economic Policy.

Admission requirements The course is designed for both business and law students or students interested in the subject. No specific prerequisites are required.
Course application There will be an orientation for all Summer School courses an 22 February 2023, 18:15 - 18:45 (Zoom-Livestream).

All applications have to be processed through the Summer School office.
The enrollment for the course is at the same time the final registration for the exam!

The online application is open from 22 February until 20 March 2023. Applications that are submitted by March 5 (23:55) will be handled on a priority basis.

Final grades will be determined by class participation (25%), one in-class presentation (25%), and 24-hour take-home final examination (50%), which will be distributed on Friday, 28 July 2023.
