Content | This is an advanced methods course for the study of Quaternary terrestrial ecosystems. Through a series of lectures, independent critical readings, and student-led seminars, we will explore study design, geochronological methods, data collection and analyses, and the relevance of long term environmental data to other scientific disciplines and stakeholder groups. Students will learn about a range of ecosystems from polar, mid-latitude and tropical regions of Earth and time scales from geologic time to recent centuries. We will explore methods for exploring sedimentary deposits, soils and other archives of environmental change to understand how long-term processes and rapid perturbations influence landscapes and the biosphere. We examine the indicators preserved in sediments that tell us about how vegetation has changed through time and how to combine datasets of the role of humans in modifying land cover with relevance to inform land management and public policy challenges. |

Admission requirements | Students should have an interest in and have introductory knowledge on environmental processes and ecology with an awareness of human-environment modifications. Students without this expertise are also welcome to participate, but should be willing to independently acquire basic background on these topics as necessary to understand the course contents. |
