59841-01 - Lecture: Fundamentals of Demographic Economics 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Robert Stelter (robert.stelter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Population growth and population ageing are among the most crucial challenges of the 21st century. But why do some populations grow fast while others tend to shrink? Why do we observe population ageing around the world? This lecture series imparts fundamental demographic and economic skills to study these questions. We discuss the most important concepts to measure demographic phenomena such as ageing, mortality or fertility and how they enter economic modelling. We study basic economic frameworks to model fertility and mortality. These frameworks allow us to discuss how we can explain that the average number of births is lower in developed than in developing economics and why economic development is positively linked to longevity.
Learning objectives The measurement and modeling of:
• population dynamics and age structures
• fertility and mortality
