Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Sébastien Kraenzlin (sebastien.kraenzlin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The lecture Applied Monetary Policy is a block course aimed at giving students insight into the world of monetary policy. The lecture is divided into three parts. The first part provides the definition of the most important terms in monetary policy. The second part lists the goals and concepts of a central bank and shows which instruments central banks have at their disposal to achieve their goals. Finally, the third part of the lecture discusses the measures taken by the most important central banks during the financial crisis (starting in 2007), with a focus on the Swiss National Bank (SNB). Each block will be illustrated with applied practical examples. The second part also includes some simulations with the students, in which the participants can take on the role of the central bank as well as the commercial banks. The simulations give the students a better insight into the interest rate management by the central banks as well as into the liquidity management of the banks.
