69365-01 - Seminar: Digital Literary Studies: Digital Methods to Literary Data Analysis 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers José Luis Losada Palenzuela (joseluis.losadapalenzuela@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content It is becoming increasingly common to consider a poem, a novel, a theater play as data. Digital Literary Studies analyse these data with the help of computers, using interdisciplinary approaches, digital tools, techniques and infrastructures.
This raises new questions for literary studies in areas such as the evolution of the canon, literary style and authorship, textual editing and criticism, the representation of literary space, intertextuality, the interaction of fictional characters: How can digital methods be integrated into literary studies? How to accurately analyse intertextuality or sentiment in literature? How to perform authorship attribution through stylometry? How to create literary corpora for data analysis? How to perform distant analysis on literary corpora?
In the seminar we will explore these questions by reflecting on the most common concepts of the discipline (text as data, distant reading, statistical methods,...), applying them to concrete literary examples from the European multilingual tradition and putting them directly into practice, from the perspective of a literary scholar, with the help of digital methods and tools.
The course does not require any prior knowledge or special computer skills. It is designed to introduce students of literature to the basics of the digital methods.
Learning objectives - To familiarise students with the main outputs of the discipline; - to provide insights into the analysis, visualisation and interpretation of literary data using the most common methods and tools;
- to develop students' digital skills in markup languages, the R programming language and advanced text editors;
- to prepare students for independent evaluation of digital methods applied to literature.
