69184-01 - Seminar: Facing the Reality: Ukrainian Cinema After 2014 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Dariia Badior (dariia.badior@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course will introduce Ukrainian fiction and non-fiction films made and released after the Revolution of Dignity of 2013-2014. The Revolution was the turning point of the latest Ukrainian history and was an inspiration, source and cause for the whole new generation of Ukrainian filmmakers to (re)appear.

Is this a “Ukrainian New Wave”? How to speak and write about the new generation of cinema appearing before your eyes? Ukrainian filmmakers, after 2014, faced the harsh and fascinating reality of a country that regained its identity and started a fundamental discussion on the new social contract.

During the course, divided into two big intensives, we will watch, discuss and analyze pairs of Ukrainian films dedicated to specific topics relevant not only to Ukrainian audiences and society but also to Eastern Europe and beyond: war and revolutions; memory and archives; coming of age in the time of changes; decentralization, both political and symbolical, etc. We will dive into, zoom in and dissect the number of challenging issues of a society that lives through civil change, reforms, partial occupation of its territories and war.
Learning objectives One of the course’s objectives is to continue to develop the critical instrumentary of watching films, analyzing their pretext and contexts—economical, political, esthetical and ethical. Another objective would be to learn how to see a film not only as a number of arranged frames on the screen but also to look beyond the screen, reflect on it and try to formulate the result in any form.
Bibliography The list of films and bibliography will be provided later.
