Content This course focuses on advanced research skills for Master in Critical Urbanisms students who are preparing for their thesis work. Students will be trained to bring together the research skills that were developed in previous modules (the Ways of Knowing the City module as well as either the Urbanism from the South, Urbanism across Geographies, or Anthropological Fieldwork modules). The goal of this studio is to enrich our analytical methods from the perspective of more than one discipline and through interactive exercises that deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of key debates in urban studies, the research design process, methodological skill sets, and ethical and epistemological questions around knowledge production. The studio centers an exploration of various methodological traditions to enhance students’ ability to gather and analyze research material about and through verbal, spatial, temporal, and bodily practices. Students will be guided to develop and draft their individual thesis proposal as well as a seminar paper focused on interdisciplinary methodology.

Learning objectives - Development of an independent, interdisciplinary urban research project
- An ability to integrate methods, approaches, and theoretical frameworks from different thought traditions to generate original ideas
- The ability to work across research mediums and connect the use of images, spatial practices, material analyses, and discursive evidence to produce narrative and visual projects.
Comments Only open for Critical Urbanisms students who have fulfilled the Critical Urbanisms Intro module, the Ways of Knowing and the Urbanism across geographies/Urbanism from the South/Anthropology modules.
