Content | This course explores the evolution of the nationalities and minority policies in the Soviet Union in the 1920s-1930s. It provides an account for the preferential Bolshevik attitude towards different national and ethnic groups within the Soviet borders and examines the differences in implementing the all-Soviet policies in various Soviet republics during the 1920s. The study of the Soviet nationalities policy will provide for understanding of the origins of various contemporary conflicts in the area. The course is divided into thematic sections, examining different aspects of the early Soviet nation-building. The course will begin with exploring the theory of national identities, nationalisms and state building with a close focus on Eastern Europe and Imperial Russia. It will continue with an examination of the Bolshevik take on the questions of ethnic and religious diversity of the Soviet Union and the national communist opposition in the Soviet borderlands. The core of the module is to discuss the early Soviet nationalities policy of korenizatsiia introduced in 1923. During the module we will consider such thematic sections as border-making, the use of languages and religions, arts and cinema. The evolution of the korenizatsiia policy after the Stalin’s “great break” in 1928/29 will be analysed. The course will be concluded by discussing the experience of sovietisation of the Western territories and republics, joined to the Soviet Union after 1939. |
