69250-01 - Practical course: How to Lie with Maps 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Olena Palko (olena.palko@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course aims to consider the historical role of maps and cartographical imaginations for the processes of national self-awareness, nation-building and national movements since the mid 19th century. Arguably, maps do not provide an accurate geographical representation of a territory, rather maps interpret the impression of a territory in the eyes of the cartographer. Thongchai Winichkul once stated that “a map anticipates special reality, not vice versa. A map is a model for, rather than a model of, what it purported to present.” With this in mind, this course aims to question the “objective” character of maps, and develop student’s critical perspective on maps as primary sources. This module aims to answer the question of what can we learn about Eastern Europe and the region’s past by looking at maps created by national cartographers.
