69474-01 - Lecture: Deixis in Grammar, Text and Embodied Talk 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course proposes an overview of the diversity of issues and phenomena covered by the notion of deixis in linguistics. Deixis refers to linguistic phenomena that are contextually dependent for their interpretation and reference (e.g. let’s meet here, supposes a contextual access to the place where the sentence is uttered in order to understand where here is). So, deixis has been a crucial phenomenon to recognize the importance of context within the linguistic system, and more generally to acknowledge the role of situated action and the body (e.g. pointing gestures—and more generally body postures— accompanying deictic expressions). Deixis is also a fascinating phenomenon for showing the richness of linguistic diversity (e.g. where German has 3 terms, hier, da, dort, Tolai, an Oceanic language, has 32 terms for referring to place). The course will show how deixis has been discussed in various sub-disciplines of linguistics (linguistic anthropology, psycholinguistics, typology, interactional linguistics) and the variety of phenomena it has highlighted (the role of culture, cognition and embodiment in the conception of language). The course will also discuss different areas concerned by deixis — such as reference to space, time, and person — and the kind of issues it raises for analysis in texts and spoken interaction.
