69504-01 - Seminar: Leadership II: Communication and the Art of Building Relationships 1 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The workshop can also be attended without having participated in Leadership I.

The course will be held by Andrea Kleinhuber, leadership development professional (Universitätsspital Basel).

In this workshop we will consider different levels and forms of communication in the context of leadership. Our main focus will be on leadership as a “relational art” with an emphasis on interpersonal relationships and on key aspects of communication in that regard (e.g. feedback). Participants will familiarize themselves with a range of models that are helpful in analyzing conversational dynamics and provide pointers for how to improve communication where it does not yet work out as intended. They will also reflect on their own conversational styles and habits of listening with a view to expanding their communicative repertoire. This will support them in engaging effectively with the various styles of others and building better relationships with people who come from different assumptions and take different approaches in how they communicate.

In terms of methods, this interactive workshop will combine short lectures, plenary and small group discussions and exercises. It will convey specific means and skills (e.g. solution-focused or systemic questions as leadership tools), but also a broader perspective on the dynamics of leadership communication and the art of building relationships.
Learning objectives - to appreciate communication as foundational to the artistry of leadership and learn about “essen-tials” in that regard
- to understand how to engage constructively with different conversational styles
- to consider “best practices” for giving and receiving feedback
- to explore the crucial role of nonverbal aspects of communication
- to discern the power of framing in leadership communication
