| Content | In this course, we will study written, spoken and multimodal data and explore the role that language plays in health contexts. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, we will also draw on discursive psychology, sociology and the medical humanities in addition to linguistics. Students will collect their own data (e.g. health information leaflets, websites, peer-too-peer support sites, etc.) from a number of methodological and theoretical angles. Particular attention will be given to speech events revolving around counselling, advising, and informing. This seminar continues the topic of language and health introduced in the lecture in spring term 23. Having attended this lecture is recommended but not a necessary entry requirement. If you did not attend the lecture, please familiarize yourself with the reader available in ADAM before term starts. |
| Learning objectives | Students learn about the connection between health and language and gain experience in designing research projects and analysing extracts of data in class. |
