Lecturers | Ladina Bezzola Lambert (ladina.bezzola@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | An old man, a young man, a man in his prime: Shakespeare’s three tragic heroes, each in his own spot, are quite different, but they share a desire to have their stories proclaimed as well as an awareness that it will be beyond their control. Let’s take a close look at the three plays, their title characters and the changing significance ascribed to them in the history of the plays’ reception. Let’s read closely, while trying to make the leap from page to stage, not so much as regards the plays’ performance histories as by endeavoring to envision modalities of enacting the written lines. |
Learning objectives | In addition to the close textual analysis of plays and familiarizing themselves with Shakespeare’s language, students will gain in-depth knowledge of the theatrical culture in this period and become familiar with a variety of critical approaches to the three plays. |
Bibliography | Recommended editions (to be purchased): "King Lear", ed. Jay L. Halio, New Cambridge Shakespeare, 2005 (ISBN: 9780521847919) "Othello", ed. Norman Sanders, New Cambridge Shakespeare, 3rd ed., 2018 (ISBN: 9781107569713) "Hamlet", ed. Philip Edwards, New Cambridge Shakespeare, 3rd ed., 2019 (ISBN: 9781316606735) Further texts will be made available on the ADAM server. |
Comments | Students are expected to have given the three plays a first reading before the beginning of the semester so as to be prepared to give the sections assigned per week a careful, critical reading. Additional secondary texts will be assigned from week to week. |
