Content Welcome to the labyrinth …! The Gothic as a mode of writing has been very influential in English literary history, and this course aims both to give an overview and to address important specific topics within the Gothic, like aesthetic theory, gendering, the uncanny and the role of the supernatural. We will trace the Gothic as a genre and a mode of writing from its early days in the late 18th century to the fin-de-siècle.
Learning objectives Students will gain an insight into the developments, the aesthetics and cultural resonances of the Gothic tradition as a key element of British literary and cultural history.
