70402-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Mechanics II: Dynamics 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Nicolas Gerig (nicolas.gerig@unibas.ch)
Georg Rauter (georg.rauter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Point kinematics
Kinematics of rigid bodies
Basics of kinetics
Kinetics of rigid bodies
Kinetics of the center of mass
Energy laws
Oscillations

The lecture is set up as an inverted class room: The theoretical content of the lecture will be made accessable one week before the physical lecture in form of videos and accompanying material such as lecture notes, programs etc. The students are asked to study the material until the next lecture to be able to ask questions and follow the exercises.
In addition, the students will obtain exercises that they can solve on their own until the next lecture. During the physical lectures, the exercises will be be solved/corrected together in class. Students have time to ask questions and indicate the need for additional examples if needed.
Learning objectives Understanding the theory and being able to solve simple problems on the following topics:
Point kinematics
Kinematics of rigid bodies
Basics of kinetics
Kinetics of rigid bodies
Kinetics of the center of mass
Energy laws
Oscillations

Mastering the lecture content involves being able to set up the kinematics and dynamics equations, transform them between coordinate systems, solve the equations and interpret the solutions.

Exercises involve manual solving of equations related to the lecture's topics and interpreting the solutions. Also, the influence of different system parameters on these systems and their solutions will be discussed and should help the students to get a feeling for dynamic systems, their parameters, and interpreting their behaviour. In addition, digital means like Matlab/Simulink, Maple or other tools for simulation and problem solving will be used to deepen the understanding of common engineering tools, functions, and representation of solutions.
