Lecturers | Doron Cohen (doron.cohen@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This seminar is about how to reduce behavioural and social problems with the help of psychology. We will review and discuss behavioural phenomena from three distinct perspectives: An “economist” perspective, a (more) “psychological” perspective, and a (more) “behavioral economist” perspective. Through active and open discussions, we will map the basic constructs and fundamental assumptions that each perspective entails. A point of focus will be understanding of basic models of learning and the challenges of predicting behavior. Throughout the semester we will see that in many cases, there is high sensitivity to economic incentives (but not always in the expected direction). Thus, an intelligent design of the reward system can allow for better coping with systematic social and organizational issues. |
Learning objectives | Students will learn and actively discuss: 1. Practical implications of classical phenomena in behavioural economics. 2. The importance of theory-driven predictions when designing different interventions and mechanisms (with a focus on the leading models in behavioural economics). 3. First steps in designing organizational environments aimed at minimizing social conflicts. |
