Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Emiliana Fabbri (emiliana.fabbri@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course will provide the students with fundamental electrochemistry concepts and hands-on laboratory experience in the field of electrochemistry, specifically within the context of energy related applications.
Learning objectives Fundamental electrochemistry concepts; apply these concepts in the context of energy-related applications; get the students acquainted with different electrochemical techniques.
Equilibrium conditions: Electrochemical potential, Electrode potential, Equilibrium potential, Reference electrode, Electrochemical series, Nernst Equation.
Reaction kinetics: Electrochemical cells, Galvanic and Electrolysis cells, Faradaic vs non-Faraday process, Overpotentials, Butler Volmer equation, Tafel Equation, Mass transport, Diffusion limiting current
Basic techniques/tools in electrochemistry: potentiostatic, galvanostatic, cyclic voltammetry, rotating-disc electrode, three electrode measurements, reference electrodes, counter electrodes, working electrodes.
Electrochemical energy conversion processes and introduction to the technologies: fuel cells and electrolyzers
Electrocatalysts: state-of-the-art and new research trend for oxygen reduction (fuel cells) an oxygen evolution (electrolyzers) electrocatalysts
Bibliography The course material will be prepared and provided by the lecturer. References to academic publications of specific relevance will be included within the course.

Recommended books:
-Physical Electrochemistry: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Applications, Noam Eliaz/Eliezer Gileadi
-Electrochemical Methods, A. Bard/L. Faulkner
Comments - The practical part of the course will take place at the Paul Scherrer Institut, 5232 Villigen PSI (www.psi.ch).
- The number of participants is limited to 15 (first-come first-served basis).
- Students are encouraged to bring their own protective gear for the work in the lab (lab coat, safety goggles). If needed, this can also be provided, please contact the organizer in advance.
-Participants will need to bring their laptop. In case this is not possible, please contact the organizer in advance.
- Participants need to be insured (health / accident insurance).
- Pregnant and nursing mothers must report to the organizer before the practical part of the course.
