Lecturers | Michel Kenzelmann (michel.kenzelmann@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | The lecture introduces students to the field of strongly correlated materials and their magnetic properties. Various magnetic model systems with strong correlations are covered, and their ground states and excitations are discussed. An introduction to the theoretical foundations of these model systems, with a focus on intuition rather than mathematical rigor, will be given. Important experimental methods used to explore these properties will also be discussed. Lecture topics: - Origin of magnetic degrees of freedom and interactions - Magnetism in insulators - Magnetism in metals - Quantum phase transitions - Frustrated magnetism and complex magnetic structures - Low-dimensional magnetism: 1D and 2D magnetism - Spin liquids, and their excitations - Multiferroic and skyrmion materials 1-2 experimental methods are discussed per double lesson, with a focus on large-facility methods: - thermodynamic measurements - X-ray and neutron diffraction - Inelastic neutron scattering - Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy (ARPES) - Resonant Inelastic Xray scattering (RIXS) - THz spectroscopy - Raman spectroscopy |
