| Content | This seminar will be concerned with When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, an exhibition curated by Koyo Kouoh and Tandazani Dhlakama. The exhibition was first shown at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in Cape Town in November 2022 and is opening at the Kunstmuseum Basel in May 2024. The show explores Black self-representation and celebrates global Black subjectivities and Black consciousness from pan-African and pan-diasporic perspectives. We will engage When We See Us in its broader historical, aesthetic, intellectual and political contexts through readings on African art, Pan-Africanism, Black diaspora and Global Blackness. We will likewise attend to the exhibition’s curatorial framing, and reflect on its potential resonances across institutional spaces and publics in Basel. |

Für Studierende der Geschichte gilt: Für Masterstudierende sowie fortgeschrittene Bachelorstudierende der Geschichte mit abgeschlossener Grundstufe (Nachweise: drei Proseminare, drei Proseminararbeiten). Bei Überbelegung werden Studierende der Geschichte bevorzugt zugelassen. |
