33155-01 - Fieldwork: Marine Biology and Biogeochemistry 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Every 2nd spring sem
Lecturers Claudia Frey (claudia.frey@unibas.ch)
Moritz Lehmann (moritz.lehmann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Anja Studer (anja.studer@unibas.ch)
Miriam Weber (mir.weber@unibas.ch)
Content The course covers four main topic blocks addressing specific habitats (each block involves lectures, field activities, laboratory experiments, and faunistic excercises):
1) the sediment-water interface (solute gradients, bethic fluxes, bioturbation, macrofauna)
2) inside the sediments (marine sediments and organic matter, respiration, microfauna)
3) primary production and decomposition (photosynthesis, seagrass, grazing, organic matter degradation/methanogenesis)
4) the water column (nutrient flows, planktion, marine food chain)

Specifically, the practical work involves
- collecting samples in the field (snorkeling, diving, sediment coring)
- extracting and identifying marine organisms
- quantifying biogeochemical fluxes and measuring typical oceanographic parameters (microsensor-profiling, gas chromatography, spectrophotometry)
- sharing of results and observations with the other course participants
Learning objectives - Gain experience in working scientifically in a marine environment
- Obtain knowledge of marine habitats and biodiversity
- Learn about biogeochemical processes and element cycling that occur in marine sediments, the water column, and at their interface
- Obtain integrative biological and biogeochemical insight into the coastal marine enviroment
Bibliography Details will be announced during the preparatory meeting.
Comments The registered students have to attend a preparatory meeting, which will be held in hybrid form on Wednesday,
20.03.2024, 12:15 o'clock, lecture room 103, Bernoullianum

Admission requirements No special requirements, but students should feel comfortable being in the water.
Priority is given to students that are enrolled (or will soon enroll) in one of the following UniBas MSc programs
- Vertiefung Aquatic and Isotope Biogeochemistry (Master Geowissenschaften 21)
- Masterprogramm Ökologie
- Masterprogramm Biologie der Tiere
Provided available space we will also consider UniBas BSc students and students from other Universities.
Course application Preregistration by mail to moritz.lehmann@unibas.ch as soon as possible. The official registration opens with the start of the spring semester, on Monday, 26 February 2024. There will be an enrollment list in the secretary office of the Biogeochemistry/Environmental Sciences Group Lehmann (Bernoullistrasse 30, Halima Zaljevic). The course is limited to 16 students. Pending space, we will also consider UniBas BSc students and appropriately qualified students from other universities.
