62343-01 - Course: Reading Culture 3 CP

Content This course will explore different ways in which to approach culture. Through input and activities students will learn about a variety of analytical tools that will then be used to read cultural material from print and persuasive media, photography, film and performance. Meetings will be led by the instructor and by small teams of students in an interactive format. Material to be considered includes thinkers such as Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, Annette Kuhn, Maria Lugones, Sara Ahmed. Cultural products considered will include English newspapers, political poster campaigns, social documentary photography, the films Gaslight and Double Indemnity, performance by Damaged Goods.
Learning objectives Students will learn about key figures in cultural theory. As well as working with the content of the cultural products we consider, students will rehearse giving presentations and leading class discussions, and taking minutes. A written assignment internal to the course will be set.
Bibliography A course pack of readings will be provided at the beginning of semester.
