71068-01 - Seminar: The English Industrial Novel 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content What is the ‘condition of England’? This question reverberated through the public sphere in England in the middle of the nineteenth century and exercised many politicians, philanthropists, philosophers and cultural commentators, who responded to the rapid changes and social pressures caused by industrialisation. In this seminar, we will explore the social, or industrial novel as an important genre that addresses the ‘condition of England’ through the medium of fiction and situate these vibrant texts in their historical and cultural contexts.
Learning objectives Students will learn about an important sub-genre of the English novel and situate this in nineteenth-century cultural debates. They will also hone their close reading skills.
