Content | In today's rapidly evolving world, the concepts of health and illness are undergoing a profound transformation. Advances in digital technology and the extensive collection and utilization of data are reshaping the way health is understood, managed, and delivered. Our seminar invites students to explore this intricate intersection of health and technology. During the seminar students will develop a nuanced understanding of the concepts of health and illness investigating the dynamic process of seeking cures and managing sickness, considering both historical and contemporary perspectives. Together we will examine the profound impact of digitalization on the health sector, uncovering the transformation of health practices and the utilization of personal data. The idea is to acquire hands-on research skills by conducting empirical investigations. Each student will delve into a distinct disease, exploring how it is constructed and managed with the assistance of digital technologies. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and empirical research, students will uncover the intricate relationship between different modes of knowledge (Who decides what a disease is?), health governance (Who controls the process of health-seeking?), democratization of diagnosis (How has the power to cure?) and surveillance capitalism (Who benefits from being healthy or being sick?). The course is open to students who are curious about the evolving landscape of health, digitalization, and the power dynamics inherent in these transformations. The only prerequisite would be that students are motivated to do empirical research themselves and are open for group work and discussions. |
