72310-01 - Seminar: Playable Imaging – Photography in, as and against Games 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Marco De Mutiis (marco.demutiis@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar explores the role of photography within spaces of computer games and through the act of play. Students will be invited to examine the emergence of phenomena like in-game photography, connected to photorealism and developments of camera simulations within game spaces. The seminar addresses the transformations of imaging systems, and the frictions between the tradition of analogue photography and contemporary digital and networked images embedded in computer games, as well as the ways in which forms of play and game structure shape the politics of representation and image circulation. Combining theoretical lectures with practical sessions, students will be invited to reflect upon different questions that form the notion of “playable imaging”. What kind of images and image-making practices are produced by different forms of play? In what ways games reinforce or resist different ideas of photography and specific politics of representation and circulation? What subjects are produced by ludic forms of image captures in game worlds and how can players act photographically between the rigid structure of the game and alternative forms of play?
