Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Valentin Köhler (valentin.koehler@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | The main objective is to discuss enzyme catalysis for fine chemical synthesis and includes the following chapters: general aspects of enzyme catalysis, hydrolytic reactions, reductions, oxidations, formation of C-C bonds, addition and elimination, transfer reactions, halogenation and dehalogenation. Mechanisms, stereochemistry, cascade catalysis, directed evolution, enzyme repurposing, process considerations, and other topics will also be addressed. |
Learning objectives | The primary aim is to learn the central transformations frequently employed in biotransformations and apply this knowledge to synthesis planning for simple molecules. |
Bibliography | The foundation of the lecture is the book ‘Biotransformations in Organic Chemistry, 7th edition’ by Kurt Faber, available on the University net. An additional resource is the book ‘Biocatalysis in Organic Synthesis’ by Nicholas J. Turner and Luke Humphreys. Research articles contribute to the lecture content. |
