Learning objectives | Upon completion of the course, students will: 1. Have a broad understanding of health and healthcare from an economic viewpoint, and understand how healthcare markets differ from other markets. 2. Recognise the importance of choice and scarcity in economics, and efficiency in healthcare. 3. Understand the Swiss healthcare system and the basic economic mechanisms principles behind it. 4. Understand the different healthcare tariffs and billing (related to nursing) and current policy developments in financing and tariff setting 4. Understand economic evaluations in relation to healthcare programs, how to measure costs and effects/benefits. 6. Develop an understanding of rational choice and priority setting using economic evaluation, and understand the importance of healthcare technology assessments in different countries. 5. Critically appraise a health economic study using guidelines and checklists for the assessment of published health economic evaluations. 7. Understand the importance of data collection alongside clinical trials und from real-world data sources (e.g. data from health insurances). Identify the differences between economic evaluations alongside clinical trials and model-based evaluations in economic research. 8. Understand the specifics and different approaches to costing in implementation science to provide valid input data for other advanced health economics methods used in implementation science. 9. Understand individual decision making in public health and problems that arise from the way decisions are made in the clinical setting (behavioural health economics) |
