54858-01 - Seminar: 101 Things I Learned in Computer Science 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Christian Tschudin (christian.tschudin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content From "how to count to 2 (that is, 10)" to "O(2^n)", "Bayes' rule", "divide and conquere", "support vector machine" and "LaTeX", this seminar will collect, describe, test-read and illustrate core concept of Computer Science studies in a concise way. The seminar is offered for Computer Science students close to their MSc thesis and is suitable for both the Distributed Systems and the Machine Intelligence specialization, as well as PhD students. Due to the content of the seminar, having a BSc or MSc in Computer Science is a strict requirement. This seminar is inspired by the compelling book series of MIT press which started with "101 Things I Learned in Architecture School".
Learning objectives The goal is to reflect on our "deformation professionelle" and to reveal these thought structures to people outside of the field of Computer Science. As a side product, a booklet-like collection of high-quality illustrated articles will be produced. It will extend the booklet that was created in the seminar's 2019 instance, see https://tilics.dmi.unibas.ch/start
