72644-01 - Seminar: The Lost Island? History of Crimea Since the 18th Century 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Olena Palko (olena.palko@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar will explore the entangled history of Crimea from the mid-18th century until the present day, tracing its main historical trajectories and the changing status of the peninsula as part of different empires and state entities. Key milestones examined will include the Crimea as home to the Crimean Khanate, the Crimean Question in the Russo-Turkish wars, its incorporation into the Russian Empire, the contested status of Crimea during the wars and revolutions, and the status of Crimea as part of Ukraine. Moreover, we will assess the significance of Crimea for the European political order, as demonstrated by the Crimean War of 1853-56, and the Russian war against Ukraine since 2014, as well as the place of the peninsula in Russia’s political imagination and propaganda. Apart from those political high points, we will consider various aspects of Crimea’s identity in flux, looking at the lived experiences and various forms of interactions between the peninsula’s poliethnic population. Placing Crimea at the centre of our course offers a unique opportunity to understand the multi-layered interwoven history of the region, as well as its dynamic political identifications. Moreover, through the case of Crimea, we will engage with the most recent historiographic debates on imperialism and post-colonialism.
