72657-01 - Practical course: Arbeiten im Archiv: Afrikanische Diaspora-Geschichte(n) in Basel - Auto/Biografie, Archive und Erinnerung 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Dag Henrichsen (dag.henrichsen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Basel’s African diaspora histories have been repeatedly researched in various ways and publicized in various formats, including academic theses and monographs, and popularized by means of the city tour “Africa in Basel – an Urban Safari”. Much of the existing literature is in German and thus not accessible to a significant number of Basel’s African Studies students or members of the diaspora themselves. Similarly, Basel’s current academic African Studies research agendas rarely embrace Basel’s diaspora (histories) or explore, in particular, the experiences of (historical) African Studies scholars in Basel and their research agendas.

The AMT (Archives, Methods, Theory) Übung aims at providing students with, firstly, an introduction to various existing archives (Basler Afrika Bibliographien, Mission 21, Basel State Archives). Methodologically speaking, the focus will be on assessing archival limitations and colonial epistemologies for collections curated within a city society built on Swissness and Whiteness. Secondly, students will be introduced to recording techniques in order to create new archives in collaboration with representatives of Basel’s current African diaspora (organizations) and African Studies scholars. Thirdly, auto/biographical approaches will be introduced, with particular reference to personal memories, experiences of discrimination, collective memorialization and placemaking practices. This entails reflections on conceptualizing (Basel´s) diasporas.

The Übung collaborates with diaspora associations and African Studies scholars based in Basel and organizes a focused African diaspora workshop in late November 2024. A follow-up course in the Spring semester 2025 is planned, as are an exhibition and publication project for 2026. The Übung does provide Praktikums-/internship possiblities.
