72857-01 - Proseminar: Deep Reading: «The Gift» & Theories of Value 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lesley Nicole Braun (lesleynicole.braun@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In an age where rapid information consumption is the norm, the need for the skill of deep reading becomes increasingly crucial. Deep reading, which involves modes and techniques of interpretation and comprehension, is foundational to academic learning. This proseminar is designed to offer a space where students can immerse themselves in one of Anthropology’s formative texts: The Gift by Marcel Mauss.

This book examines the concepts of exchange and contract within societies that, despite some assertions, do not lack economic markets. Mauss argues that markets, as a human phenomenon, exist in all known societies. However, these societies feature exchange systems distinct from our own.

Each week we will read sections of The Gift in-person in efforts to analyse the different layers of meaning. Class sessions will be in seminar format, stimulating discussion and group work. To augment our concentration for deep reading we will transform the classroom into a digital-distraction-free space.

Admission requirements The number of participants is limited to 25 people. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study.
