| Content | This course presents and discusses a variety of fields that constitute forensic linguistics, showing how linguistic analysis can contribute to issues of legal investigations and justice. Three areas will be covered. First, the area of forensic sciences will be presented, its historical developments and current challenges, concerning not only police investigations but also inquiries relative to state violence and violations of human rights. This will be the occasion to situate the work of forensic linguistics within the larger field of forensic studies, which are located between natural sciences and anthropology. Second, the course will show the variety of contributions of linguistics to forensic inquiries, ranging from phonetics to syntax, from the lexicon to the analysis of texts. Third, the course will discuss interactional forensic approaches, dealing with the analysis of police interrogations and trials in tribunals. Globally the course will reflect about how linguistics can provide for evidences in legal investigations and how this connects to larger issues in justice and human rights. |
