| Content | Die Musik gilt als eine Kunstform, die anders als Literatur, Film oder Malerei keine Sachverhalte darstellt. Sie sei ein bedeutungsloses Spiel mit Formen. Gegen diese Auffassung wird immer wieder eingewandt, dass uns die Musik doch nicht so viel bedeuten würde, wenn sie selbst keine Bedeutungen artikulieren würde. Im Seminar werden wir uns diese Kontroverse um Sinn und Bedeutung der Musik ausgehend von einem konkreten Fall erschließen: Die Musik Gustav Mahlers (1860-1911) und deren Deutung durch Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969). Mahlers rätselhafte Symphonik weist eine außergewöhnliche Vielfalt von Arten des Bedeutens auf. Adornos Monographie Mahler. Eine musikalische Physiognomik legt diese Vielschichtigkeit frei und kann daher als ein philosophischer Versuch gelesen werden, die Frage nach der Bedeutung von Musik zu beantworten. Music is regarded as an art form that, unlike literature, film or painting, does not represent. It is therefore said to be a meaningless play with forms. Against this position, it is often argued that music would not mean so much to us if it did not articulate any meaning itself. In the seminar, we will explore this controversy about the meaning and significance of music on the basis of a specific case: The music of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) and its interpretation by Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969). Mahler's enigmatic symphonic music displays an extraordinary variety of ways of meaning. Adorno's monograph Mahler. Eine musikalische Physiognomik reveals this complexity and can therefore be read as a philosophical attempt to answer the question of the meaning of music. |
