Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Evelyn Dietsche (evelyn.dietsche@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The objectives of this BA course are to i) introduce undergraduate students to development and economic growth theories and the main variables that these have identified to explain the outcomes of economic, social, and political development processes, and ii) for students to learn about and discuss some of the issues and challenges that occupy the contemporary development debate. These includes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the nexus of climate change, natural resources, and access to energy, and the rediscovery of industrial policy.
The course balances knowledge acquisition on the objectives and the impact of development policy with gaining an overview of the different methodologies and approaches that development researchers apply to gaining insights on the development process and the relative importance of different sets of economic, social, and political variables.
Sessions will be based on i) the lecturer providing topical inputs and ii) students discussing their observations and/or undertaking group work.
