73129-01 - Colloquium: Pragmatics and Translation 3 CP (CANCELLED)

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Olena Yuriivna Dubenko (olenayuriivna.dubenko@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this colloquium, we will discuss the major concepts and theories that are currently instrumental in the interdisciplinary research field lying on the intersection of pragmatics and translation studies. At the core of the course lies understanding of translation as a type of situated language use. In this perspective, we will analyze the main challenges for translating/interpreting/transferring of pragmatic phenomena into other linguistic and non-linguistic systems. In so doing, we will highlight pragmatically appropriate strategies of translation as well as typical translation errors in various spheres of interlanguage communication (from real-life (legal, medical, public, educational etc) settings to fictional text worlds). The above questions will be considered on the basis of both related linguacultures and remote ones, characterized with a considerable cultural asynchrony.
Learning objectives Students get familiar with the issues outlined in the content section and obtain a theoretical framework for their further independent research.
