72928-01 - Seminar: Language and Aging: Learning, Processing, Stereotypes 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Alice Julie Blumenthal-Dramé (alicejulie.blumenthal-drame@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Cognitive aging in healthy individuals is often perceived as a process of general cognitive decline. This psycholinguistically oriented seminar aims to subject this ageist stereotype to critical empirical and sociolinguistic examination and to provide a more nuanced perspective on the effects of aging on language acquisition and processing. More specifically, based on overview chapters and recently published studies, we will explore how different facets of language learning and processing (e.g., reading, syntactic processing, interaction) evolve across the lifespan, examine underlying explanatory factors (reorganization of memory, increased world knowledge, sensory changes), and discuss potential influences on research outcomes due to certain assumptions and research settings. The seminar will also provide students with hands-on experience in conducting their own small-scale psycholinguistic experiments.
Learning objectives • Develop skills in reading and evaluating scientific literature.
• Identify factors influencing language learning and processing across the lifespan.
• Critically analyze stereotypes and research biases.
• Gain practical skills in designing and conducting psycholinguistic experiments
Bibliography All obligatory readings for the course will be made available on ADAM.
