73143-01 - Seminar: Advanced Scientific Writing in Natural Sciences 1 CP

Content This course shows how to write clear research articles and review articles. We talk about organising writing projects, planning text structures, writing drafts, and improving texts. Participants work on individual article projects and receive feedback from the trainer.
Learning objectives Students will learn about following topics:
• working techniques and software tools for productive writing
• stages in the writing process: (1) collecting information, (2) developing text structures, (3) drafting, (4) revising
• setting targets and scheduling writing sessions
• managing procrastination
• writing with others (e.g. coauthors)
• message, thesis statement, title
• paragraphs as building blocks
• structure of research articles
• structure of review articles
• sentence structure
• word choice
Comments For PhD students of the Department of Environmental Sciences and of the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center (PSC).
In addition to the regular course registration at MOnA, PSC PhD students should register on the PSC course registration platform (refer to the weblink and choose Plant Sciences).

Admission requirements Participants should be sufficiently advanced in their research projects to be able to work on individual research articles or review articles. Before the course, participants determine preliminary titles and tentative conclusions for their projected articles.
