73164-01 - Theory seminar: From Virtual Patients to AI Therapists and the Promises and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Psychology 3 CP

Content The burden due to mental disorders has accrued by 42% between the 1990 and the 2010s. It is not uncommon for individuals looking for clinical help to wait 2 years or more as properly trained personnel is lacking, and many do not seek help due to fear of stigma or lack of trust, notably. Advances in artificial intelligence show promise in alleviating the symptomatology of individuals in need of care, and also in the training of mental health professionals. In this seminar we will examine the issue of the promises and challenges of artificial intelligence in clinical psychology. Following a general introduction, students will present selected papers which will focus on theoretical concepts and empirical studies relevant to this issue. Home assignments will also be dedicated to the conception of clinical chatbots: virtual psychology counselor/s and virtual patient/s (the students prepare necessary documents and chatbot system prompts, the instructor make the necessary for the chatbots to be functional). The chatbots will be presented by the students during the seminar. The general approach of the seminar is to integrate the discussed findings, theoretical constructs and applied resources through discussions.
Learning objectives Acquire knowledge related to the covered topics (reading literature, attending presentations, and the preparation of documentation for a chatbot therapist / patient); Develop argumentative and presentation skills; Learn to plan effectively.
Bibliography Will be communicated during the first session.

Admission requirements Abgeschlossenes Bachelorstudium Psychologie.
Course application Die interne Anmeldefrist der Fakultät für Psychologie ist der 18. August 2024. Die Anmeldung erfolgt durch das Belegen via services.unibas.ch (Start: 1.8.24). Vom 19. August bis 30. August 2024 nehmen die Dozierenden die Einteilung in die Seminare vor und informieren die Studierenden entsprechend.
