Semester | fall semester 2024 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Marwan Kilani (marwan.kilani@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | The course will aim at exploring sociolinguistic topic in a diachronic perspective. Language and society are in constant dialogue, today as in the past. Yet, are sociolinguistic phenomena attested today recognizable also in ancient societies? Or are they specifically modern phenomena? What the comparison of modern and ancient reality tell us about the past, and about the present? The seminar will use modern realities as starting point to explore diachronic phenomena, which in turn will help us better contextualize what we see in the present. |
Learning objectives | Becoming familiar with main sociolinguistic concepts, patterns, and dynamics, and learn how these tools can be employed to explore different past and present realities |
Bibliography | Literature will be provided over the semester. For students who are not already familiar with basic concepts in sociolinguistics, it could be good to read at least the introduction of: Wardhaugh and Fuller, An Introduction to Sociolinguistics. |
