74004-01 - Seminar: Inheriting Injustice 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Rensing (julia.rensing@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content What we inherit or not is decisive for the ways in which we can craft our lives and build our futures. Both the material and immaterial dimensions of inheritance are closely tied to questions around access to property, knowledge and ultimately power. In this seminar, we will explore the diverse manifestations of injustice connected to processes of inheriting. Examples for this are debates on family identity and heirloom, injustices in knowledge production or calls for restorative justice from the Global South. For our engagement with such discourses, we will look at a plethora of texts and media, ranging from the photographic projects by Santu Mofokeng and Lebohang Kganye, reflections on the archive, history and knowledge (Uhuru Phalafala and Carine Zaayman) and theories on memory and positionality (Marianne Hirsch and Michael Rothberg).
Bibliography Felwine Sarr and Benedicte Savoy: “The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage. Toward a New Relational Ethics
David D. Kim: “Action! On Reframing Postcolonial Patrimony”
Uhuru Portia Phalafala: “The Matriarchive as Life Knowledge in Es’kia Mphahlele’s African Humanism”
Carine Zaayman: “Anarchive (Picturing Absence)”
Michael Rothberg: “The Implicated Subject”
