Content | The body has become a focal point of a range of cultural and political discourse and practices in modern society. Besides its various social and philosophical underpinnings, it is one of the main tools of military discipline. Based on major literature in the history of body, this course aims at leading students to deepen their perspectives on the military education and training principles in modern Ottoman Army. How did the body evolve into a tool and objective of political power throughout history? Why is military training important in the building process of nation-states? What is the impact of Ottoman military training upon the formation of a desirable citizen? In what ways has the Ottoman experience in military training interacted with its European counterparts? By asking and answering these questions, students will be able to broaden their historical understanding of the military education and physical training in 20th century, that would also contribute to their knowledge in history and other disciplines. |

Assessment details | There will be a three-hour intensive seminar every two weeks and we will meet on Friday afternoons. In the beginning of each course, the lecturer will introduce main subjects of the day and the certain points for further thinking. Then, 20-25 minutes shall be used for students’ analysis of papers assigned for the week. There will also be a general discussion with students’ pre-class questions. Each student’s performance will be evaluated in accordance with her or his midterm assignment, final essay, paper presentation and participation in the seminars. Further requirements and the syllabus of the course will be given during the first session in September. |
