Inhalt | The United Nations Environment Programme (2018) estimates that humankind produces over 300 million tons of plastic waste every year. This has severe consequences for health, food security, the quality of life of local communities, etc. and challenges governments, businesses, and civil society – especially in developing economies in which individual consumption increases while functioning, large-scale waste management strategies are scarce. In this course, we explore the media discourse of plastic waste and recycling in India from a sociological, societal, cultural, and context-sensitive perspective. We discuss social, economic, environmental, and political dimensions of India’s plastic waste. We will systematically analyze Indian newspaper articles, connect the results to academic literature, and present our findings at the end of the course. |
Lernziele | - analyze media articles and present findings at the end of the course - learn about global impact of plastic waste in India from different stakeholder perspectives - become aware of the importance of culture and context for understanding and addressing social, economic, and environmental problems |
